From the Desk of Editor

AIOS Times is a new initiative by AIOS to keep the members abreast with the latest techniques, technology and preferred practice styles in Ophthalmology.

The aim of the AIOS Times is to give practical information on common practices in ophthalmology, so that we learn from each other’s experience. Infections are always dreaded nightmare for ophthalmologists, especially if they occur after elective surgeries.

The first issue is focused on the infection control and the health care accreditation. Although accreditation of health care facilities is always a strenuous task, it is plagued with a debate whether it is really required or not. Do we all have to aim and ape for the NABH accreditation? Perhaps not, but we do have to aim for quality in operation theater practice.

Simple terminology such as disinfection and sterilization may be confusing and hence this has been described lucidly. Various types of sterilization are available which may vary depending on the structure of the ophthalmic set up such as eye clinic, nursing home or a large corporate hospital.

The use of intravitreal injections not only prevents visual loss but also help in augmentation of the visual acuity. However the use of intravitreal injections may also lead to endophthalmitis in unforeseen situations. The pearls in real world scenario to manage the same are highlighted. We have revisited the previous AIOS guidelines on infection control but there is a need to review and reformulate new AIOS Guidelines.

The NABH guidelines for ophthalmic care which were followed earlier were same as those for health care organizations (HCO) and small health care organizations (SHCO). Very soon, it was realized that ophthalmology branch, requires a standalone guidelines exclusively for ophthalmic care and cannot be equated with other specialities which led to the resurgscence of new NABH guidelines for eye care.

AIOS Times is an expression of the ophthalmic screen shots and would continue to be. There is a huge amount of material available in ophthalmology in internet worldwide.

AIOS TIMES is customized to ophthalmic practice in India, while keeping in view of the latest technique and technology in ophthalmology worldwide.

We welcome the contributions from our members to this magazine. This would include interesting cases, diagnostic delimmas or therapeutic possibilities. To begin with, this a hard copy but would come very soon as a weekly digest in a soft copy.
